It’s been a busy and eventful 2019. I’ve learned a lot about the business of picture book making. I’ve had 4 books published, made two book trailers, and did 3 school visits. I borrowed a sharpie at my first book signing and borrowed even more book making wisdom from 2019 Caldecott Honor winning Grace Lin, whose first name is apt. All amazing experiences. I’m filled with thankfulness for those that have enjoyed my work, offered advice, and pushed me to be better.
I’m also feeling even more grateful as 2020 kicks into gear. I had the opportunity to become our region’s SCBWI Illustration Coordinator and attend the SCBWI 2020 Winter Conference in NYC. I entered the portfolio showcase and hoped my work would make an impression. I left 100 postcards and came back later to find an empty rubber band. I thought the cards had fallen behind the table. No. They were all taken by peers, industry professionals, and who knows who else. Sunday morning, my name was called as one of 3 honorable mentions in the portfolio showcase award.
That’s all to say, after years and years of yearning and hard work I’m filled with gratitude. I’m excited for what’s next.
Head down, pencil to paper, getting better.
